Abilene Zoo’s baby giraffe, Zahara, who was born in July, died on October 2nd following a severe leg fracture, the cause of which is unknown, according to Fox 5.
Zoo officials said Zahara was born July 20th to parents Malaika and Congo, and earned the name following a public vote over the summer. Zoo officials are now monitoring the remainder of the herd and ensuring health and safety,
“She was a precious member of our giraffe herd with her playful and spirited personality,” zoo officials said in an online news release. “Her growing bond with her family endeared her to all who met her. We know this news will be heartbreaking to the many who followed her journey from birth.”
“We are devastated by this tragic loss,” Robert Trejo, General Curator,, added. “Zahara brought immense joy to our zoo family and the community. We appreciate the overwhelming support and love shown for Zahara since her birth, and our hearts go out to everyone who felt a connection to her, especially her primary zookeepers.”
